Good morning friends!
I sincerely thank you all for the overwhelming response to our corona investigations update last week on facebook live.
It seems the pandemic is finally receding but we need to take care.
yesterday I saw my 300th patient with chronic myelod leukemia (CML) a type of a slow growing blood cancer at Lotus hospital.
the moment I reveal the diagnosis and its nature to the relatives, the first obvious question is " how can be a dreaded disease like blood cancer be " slow growing"?
it is a very rational question.
CML is a disease of white blood cells (wbc) in our blood which grows " unchecked" ...but mostly they are normal white blood cells only. In some patients this can also go on to become acute leukemia (rapidly growing blood cancer) which can be serious.
The patient whom i saw yesterday was a young lady who came from a remote tribal area in Dhule district. her wbc count was a staggering 5 lakhs! (normally it is < 11, 000!) with a huge swelling in her tummy and it would seem that she is pregnant?
good news is that we could do the special genetic test free of cost for her through our trust " Junagade Health Foundation" and start early treatment.
Another good news is that she will recover in 3-4 weeks and will be living a normal life and can be a mother one day.
she will be cleared of her leukemia by a wonder tablet called " Imatinib" which is taken once a day!
so friends, all is not lost!
hope is the only "constant" which makes us go forward.....
