Daily I am getting 3-4 calls from near ones about Dengue test being positive with high grade fever. As a Hematologist I have been treating dengue fever with very low platelet count ( platelets are a type of blood cells responsible for preventing bleeding ) Normal platelet count is 1.5 lakhs to 4.5 lakhs. We can get a sudden drop in the count in some patients. What are signs of low platelet count ? 1. Rash on limbs and body with violaceous tinge or very small pin head like red dots. 2. bleeding from gums or in cough. You will feel tired. What to do ? 1. See your doctor immediately 2. keep yourself hydrated. 3. strict bed rest 4. medicines as advised. 5. admission in a hospital if your doctor thinks so. Don't worry. It is a treatable disease.
