Corona is not the only infection today!! Dengue is on the rise! Today I interacted with few of my colleagues regarding Dengue fever, new information, management issues and the fact that it can present in a life threatening format. In today's Corona and COVID-19 disease we sometimes tend to neglect some of our old enemies (so to say !) Dengue can present with fever, bodyache just like any other viral illness including corona. 10 days ago a 32 year old female patient was referred to Lotus hospital for low platelet count (thrombocytopenia). Low platelet count can lead to bleeding internally and hence can be serious. she had fever 5 days ago and 2 days into her fever she got a corona PCR test done which was negative and the entire family was very happy and releived! 3 days later she went to her family physician and then complained of giddiness and abdominal (tummy) ache. she got a blood test called complete blood count (CBC) done which showed platelet count of only 34, 000 (normal it should be between 1.5 to 4.5 lakhs) her blood pressure was only 90mm Hg (it should be above 110mmHg) she was immediately admitted in intensive care unit at Lotus Hospital and was treated with IV fluids and other measures. Her platelet count the next day was only 13, 000 and she had bleeding from gums. she was given 1 unit of platelet transfusion and she fortunately recovered 3 days later and was discharged. friends, in the light of corona infection please dont forget that there are many infections out there and if we dont consult a doctor early one can land up in trouble. stay safe and alert.
