Friends we are all confined to mini lockdown in Maharashtra ! We are all overwhelmed with calls for hospital bed, remdesivir injections and advice about anti coagulation post COVID infection and vaccination.
Covid 19 infection predisposes all individuals to increased risk of thrombosis (blood clots)….why so?
Basically our body reacts to the viral infection by way of increasing the immune “power” so that the virus is cleared. In some patients, doing so, leads to exaggerated immune response leading to various complications like bodyache, joint pains etc. In some patients this hyper-immunity leads to small (micro) blood clots in lungs, blood vessels supplying the heart (coronary arteries) and those supplying the brain leading to lung damage, heart attacks and stroke (paralysis). This is a major cause of morbidity post COVID infection.
Your doctor will prescribe you various types of anti-clotting medications based on your age, coexisting medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension etc. We need to take is without fail.
I have also come across cases where some patients are panicking and taking two anti-clotting medicatiions! This can lead to life threatening bleeding due to overdose.
Yesterday I was called by my childhood friend whose 9 year old daughter has COVID and some one told him that she should be started on tablet Ecosprin (blood thinner). We should be aware that self medication is dangerous and may not be needed in children!
So my sincere request to all of you is to consult your doctor immediately once you think yoo might have COVID and take appropriate treatment ASAP.
