update on acquired Hemophilia, we all know that when we get a injury we bleed but then it stops as a blood clot is formed. Blood clotting is very complicated process but broadly it needs good amount of platelets and blood clotting factors. We have 13 blood clotting factors from the day we are born and any deficiency in one of them lead to increased bleeding. we had a 66 year old patient who had bleeding in her urine called hematuria and on investigations she had raised clotting factor tests and and on further testing at our Lotus coagulation lab she had a severe deficiency of Factor 8 (amongst the 13). her level was only 1% (normal 100%) This can be life threatening. she developed antibodies against factor 8 and hence they were low. why did she developed antibodies? on further testing she had underlying Lymphoma which was diagnosed on a needle biopsy. hence she was treated with chemotherapy at Lotus hospital for 6 months after which both her diseases were cured. So a simple bleeding cannot be dismissed as just ? local cause and needs to be investigated especially in eldrely people. she is fine now and will need follow up for atleast 2 years. so she had Acquired Hemoplilia A with underlying Lymphoma.
